PORTENTOUS MEETING OF CABINET
THE COMPULSORY TRAINING ISSUE ALARMIST COMMENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. April 6, 10.55 p.m.) London, April 6. The newspapers attach importance to to-day's Cabinet meeting —the "first full meeting for months, owing to Mr. As-, quith's absence. ..'.■■. — , , The "Daily Mail," in "ah "'alarmist' article, suggests that the meeting may bring the compulsion issue to a crisis. A majority in the House of Commons favours general compulsion, while Mr. Asquith has already declared that he will resign office when general compulsion is introduced. Much depends lipbn Mr. Bonar Law (the Unionist Leader), who is threatened with the revolt of a powerful Unionist section. The "Daily Mail" adds: "If Mr. Bonar Law takes a firm stand, Mr. Asquith must accept, or seo the Unionist Cabinet Ministers resign." The "Daily Chronicle" observes that the position has been ;rehdered difficult by reckless newspapers, and politiciaus seeking to bring down the Government by hook or by crook. "Happily," it adds, "the , moderate element in the Unionist Party may save the situation."
