Plain-clothes Constablo Burnett made a smart capture yesterday. As he was coming down Mee's Steps oil to Lambtbu Quay lie saw a man bolting round the corner and making in tho direction of the steps. Thinking that something was wrong, he looked about, and saw a woman who appeared to be a shop assistant talking to two constables in uniform. Taking \in the situation at'a glance, and in his own mind connecting the rapidly-retreating man with the woman talking to tho policemen, Constable Burnett made off after the man, and caught him at the top of the stops. Not being satisfied with the answers given to certain questions asked, Constable Burnett made the man accompany him. In the meanwhile the woman and the constables had 'disappeared. ~ The man Was taken to the hotels where ho said ho had been drinking, and nothing w'as found to be amiss. Then a visit was paid to a. shop on Lambton Quay. • Immediately tho two entered the shop the man was recognised as tho ono who had been seen robbing the till. Four shillings had been abstracted, and this sum was found on the man, who was immediately taken to tho polico station and charged,with tho theft. Councillor L". M'Konzio asked tho Mayor at last evening's meeting of tho City Council whether tho time was not opportuno to hold a public meeting on the milk-supply question. The Mayor ' replied that Councillor Godber, tho chairman-.of tho Health Committee, was at present away, and that it was perhaps better to wait until ho returned. : " Tho following nominations have beon received for officers of tho Metal Workers'' Union: President, W. Darby and J. Began; vice-presidents, AV. Boxhall and J. Fuller; treasurer, A. Murray and W. Wilkinson; secretary, E. Kennedy; trustee, G. Gardiner and G. Foley; committee (three wanted), J. Parle, W. Boxhall, W. Williamson, W. Lyons, and J. Honshilwood. At its meeting on Wednesday tbo Council of Law Reporting passed the following resolution: "That tho council desires to record its high appreciation of .the faithful and efficient sorvico rendered by Lieutenant S. A. Atkinson ns law reporter in tho Court of Appeal and Supreme Court at Wellington, and of the patriotism which has induced him to offer to serve his country in- tho field, and hopes to welcome him back to ,his * old position when the present call upon his energies has passed."
