ALLEGED THEFT OF MONEY

Edward Francis Yates Lawford ; who appeared before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., yesterday morning, was charged with fraudulently omitting to account for; or pay to, Alex. M'Dougall the sum of £1 10s. 11a. The offence is alleged to have been committed at Cbristchurci on or about Februaryß, accused having, it is alleged, received the amount from E. A. Dowle. On the application of Inspector Hendrey, Lawford was remanded to appear at Christchurch. POLICE COURT BUSINESS. Before Mr. W. AY. Riddell, S.M., in the Magistrate's .Court, the following cases were dealt with yesterday The usual punishment was meted out to two. first- offending inebriates. William Brew was fined 205., or, in default, seven days' detention, for drunkenness. Lilian Jukes, an old offender, was fined 20s. for-insobriety! On a further charge of wilfully damaging a cab she was ordei'ed to pay 55., the cost of repairs. . On a- charge of having taken certain furniture, valued at £10, the property of Mary Ann Stent, Joseph Wilding Smith was remanded till • to-morrow.' Bail was allowed in a personal bond of £25 and one surety of £25. William Bird Sumner pleaded guilty to the theft of a service rifle, valued at £5, the property of the New Zealand Government. The offence was committed on March 9 last, and accused had pawned the rifle for £1. He was fined 405., in default fourteen days' imprisonment, and was also ordered to refund £1 to the pawnbroker. The rifle is to be returned to the Government. William Jensen and David Patterson were remanded till to-morrow on a charge of theft of four bottles of whisky from the steamer Waimea. Bail was allowed each accused. As Ernest Devoin, charged with the attempted murder of Louisa White on March 27 last, is still in the Hospital, a further remand till April 12 was granted in his case. . John Skivington was again remanded on the charge of having caused actual bodily harm to Soloman Hyam Myers on February 15 last. In the Juvenile Court a lad, charged with theft, was convicted and discharged. .
