THE TURF
WELLINGTON RACES
AUTUMN MEETING,
The autumn, meeting of the Wellington R-acing Club, whioh opens at Trentnam to-day, promises to bo a highly successful on?.
The continued fine weather has made tho tracks very faat, and gogd times should be recorded in all the events.
The Railway Department has arranged. i\n excellent service, and special trains" running right , through will leavp Te Aro, for Trentham at 10.21 and 10.39 a.m., and Lambtoii at 10.10, 10.19, 10.37, 10.55 a.m., and 12.6 p.m. ,
The presence of Desert Gold will be tho principal attraction, and it iB understood she will be seen out in the North Island Challenge Stakes and not in the St. Leger.
The day's sport will begin at noon with the Jumpers .Plat race. Eight horses ard oarded, but the public'may'look to the two top-weights only, as their fonn ou. the tint is''-superior, to the' Others. Multiply (S. Reid) has- done more racing than Barbour Light (B. Batoh), / dud though the latter has a pull of. 161b., Multiply may wear, him down at, the finish. , For . the North Island St. Leger, one milo and three-quarters, the starters will probably be Nones (B. Deelcy) and Eligible (A. Oliver). Though the field is small the match between the pair is likely. to evoke considerable interest. . As the pair will be without a pacemaker, the .contest'may resolve itself into a sprint home, and at this department Nones may bo superior. Should Oliver eleot to go out, and force the pace on Migiblo he would" still have to contend with the finishing run of Nones, who is probably better now than at- any period of her career, Tho Plunket Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, will be contested by a big field of two-years-olds. The list contains some smart youngsters, and a surprise may be in store. Hyllus has his Napier form' to recommend him, and such a good finisher oannot be left out. Koesian was runnerup in the Welcome Stakes, and Rockbound wonj the Wellesley Stakes. Menelaus, Elation, and Hose Pink are all winners, though not in this class, and it may be the best policy to select one of the proved hordes, who will be ridden by a capable jockey. . Tho probable starters and riders in the Thompson Handicap are as follow:— -r. : st. lb. ' Balboa (J. O'Shea) 9 3 Montana (C. Price) 8 4 Pursefiller (P. Brady) 8 2 (R. Reed) ...... 8 1 Orleans (W. Bell) 7 13 , Taringamutu (A. Reed) 712 '< Oxenhope (B. Deeley)* 7 10 Hydrus IJ. .Buchanan) '. 7 10 Sir Solo (H. Watson) 7 9 Wishful (C. Emerson) 7 .7 Zeus (E. Ma-nson) .7 S Want (G. ThornerJ '6 10 Adjutant, (G. Clarke) | G 7 Rumania (C. Sinclair) fi 7 . Ogier ..... 6 7 The top-weight struck himself recontly, and may not be seen at his best on the hard track. Montana is consistent, and may be one of the well-backed division. Pursefiller jis too erratic at tho barrier, and backers have always to risk her get. ting away. Multiplication has done everything well, but so far he has not met company of tli's class. : . Orleans, is useful; but Taringamutu 18 decidedly sore. ' ■' Oxenhope is very fast over a short .course, - and a good . beginner is always at. an advantage in this race. He has also won'a mile at Timaru Tvith Bst. 101b., and was credited with running the eight furlongs in lmin. 41seo. ; - . 1 .Hydrus, on tho same mark, is a Rood three-year-old- that has shown winning form of late. "The distanoe will not trouble , the Itaramn gelding who is probably better now-than ever he was.
. Sir Solo is getting a back number, and jio rider seems oapablo of keeping Wishful from, hanging put a lot. None of the light-weisrlvts read dangerous, .and; when', the.macKine closes..Multiplication. Hydrus and Oxenhope may be fannied in that order.
The'i probable' starters in the North Island Challenge Stakes,, seven furlongs, are:-,- "
