had to be abandoned in , consequence 'of Government work, and until quite recently nothing further was done with them. THE WAIJIABINO'S BOUGH TJIIP. The steamer Waimarino. which arrived at Auckland on Sunday from Vancouver and San Francisco, had a, somewhat exciting 'voyage. Prom Vancouver to ' Suva the voyage wab uneventful, but three days after leaving the island port the vessel ran into a moderate gale, with heavy seas. During the height ot the storm the steam steering gear carried away, and the hand gear had to be utilised. By making use of stanchions., previously used when the vessel carried cattle, it was possihle to rig a temporary attachment whereby the steam steering gear could again be brought into use. No further damage was done, and the vessel proceeded on her way. Tho I gale lasted practiealTy until Auckland -was reached. On discharge of a large at tho northern fort the Waimarino sails for Sydney. ' BAItQTJENTINE SOLD. The well-known barquontinc Teabel, which as tho Southern Gross 111 ■ made many voyages to the Jlclanesian Islands, and later, under her present name, to the Eriendly Islands, has been -.sold by Captain Eoss to the Scales Line. She was built at Devonport in 1873 by Jlr. H. Niccoll, and|in her day was a remarkably fast sailer. The trado in- which, the I'sahcl will, be engaged has not yet been' announced by tho vessel's new owners.

MATATUA MAY BE'REFLOATED. . Information has been! received, to the effect that the steamer Matatua'e position is not as serious a,s was at first antici-. pated, states the "Shipping List." The steamer certainly lie; with her ' decks totally submerged, but an examination has revealed that she can be refloated, but the work will take soino time to accomplish. As a result of an investigation into tho disaster the'' Canadian Prime Minister has. notified the, owners that tho Marine Department of Canada does not believe tho trouble was occasioned by an enomy act. The explosion was, the facts elioited seem to disclose, due to gas formed by water coming into contact with carbide, which composed, part of the vessel's cargo. Captain L. B. Gillnian. tho master of the Matetua, who was killed as a result of the explosion, was in the Shaw, Savill and Albion's employ for over twenty years. Ho Brat came to Aiistralasia in a British-owned barque, which later on made a \rather extraordinary long ': trip from Lyttelton to Picton. Subsequently he served on the old Arawa. and was master of the Pakoha until 1909, -when ho was given .command of the Matetua. Mr. M'Grath, late purser of tho Oorinna, has signed on the Arahura in a similar capacity in place of Mr. C. Eichardson, who has come ashore for. orders. A wireless message from' Chatham Islands stated that tho Himitangi left Waitangi at 7.50 o'clock last night for Lyttcl-., ton, with a load of sheep and cattle. The. Maori will not receive any cargo here on Friday on account of her going into dock at Lyttelton on . Saturday morn-' ing. ~ It is probable that tho auxiliary scow Magic, at present discharging, timber at •Miramar, will leave Wellington to-morrow for Picton to load back for this port. She will not leave for Sandy Bay again until sufficient stone is ready at that place. The Blackball Company's Nsatoro arrived from Greymcruth last evening. It is expected to dispatch her to-day for tho West Coast port. The ■ Ngakuta is expectod tq-dny from, Greymouth, and will leave for that port again to-morrow. She is expected back here on Monday next. The paddle tug Mana,Which arrived from Westport on Sunday, went round to the Patent Slip to commence overhaul'yesterday. ■• ~ Tho F. and S. liner Somerset is now ex; nccted to reach Wellington on Thursday instead of .to-day. The Calm is expected from Lyttelton on Friday. The following day she will leave for Wanganui and Westport. From southern porta the Rosamond is expected, to arrive in Wellington to-morrow. The Kittewa got away for Greymouth, last night. She will load at that port for Wellington, returning hero probably on Saturday. Tho Kamo,. now at Miramar, is expected to got away for Groymouth to-day.' She will probably bo back here on Sunday. Due here on 1 Friday from Melbourne, via southern ports, the Paloona has 737 tons of cargo ,to put out before leaving for Melbourne tho following day.. Tho Government steamer Hinemoa is to go on the Patent 'Slip at tho earliest opportunity. At present discharging salt at Lyttelton tho ship Celtic Glen Is expected to leave the southern port in tho course of a day or two for Wellington, where she will discharge the romainder.
