NOTES AND COMMENTS

TBt '•'Jlincoe.l » Judging by the rush for accommodation in Wellington the Trentham' meeting, which opens on Thursday, will not want for patronage from visitors. The presence of tho crack three-year-old filly Desert Gold in the- St. Legor will be a great draw, and keen interest will bo manifested in ,the contest, In past years the St. Leger has been full of surprises, and with Nones, and Eligible against her Mr.' Lowry's filly will not have anything like a walk over. Admirers of Eligible fivo him a great chance of defeating "the Uy, as they claim that, though beaten in the Derby at Ellerslie, the gelding was finishing on better than. Desert Gold. A. Oliver, who is again to be up on Eligible, is understood to subscribe to this view. Nones, too, cannot be left out- of the calculations, for there is no doubt • that

in the Oaks at Riccarton,'she had tho champion doing her best. B.' Deeley will havo the mount on the Martian filly. ■ ' ' In the North Hand Challenge Stakes the elder division will be worthily represented by Envperador, while Egypt, Sassanof, and -Hyttus will do battle tor the two-year-olds. For the Thompson Handicap, Multiplication is still the most discussed candidate, but Hydrus and Oxenhope are rapidly coming into favour, and with Montana they may be found disputing the machine honours with tho Multifid gelding oh Thursday. The fact of Chortle, Multiplication, Marco Bello, and Eligiblo having been accepted for in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, suggests that .they..will make their Easter exertions at Ellerslie instead of Riccarton. ... Acceptances will be received for the first day's races at Awapuni up till 9.30 o'clock to-night. Final payments for tho Sires' Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes close at the same hour. Tho secretary's address is Bos 52, Palmerston "Inquirer" is informed that Clynelish started on both days,of the Gore meeting. • Shaki chnnged hands recently, and is now trained by J. Maher at Hastings. Oienhope, in charge of S. Inlford and Robert Bell in charge of E. M Donald arrived from the south yesterday. The Chokebore team also came .North in the care of A. Cutts. •'■■ ■ „ '.. ■ , Unless Nones is sent to Ellerslie, and at present there seems little likelihood of this, the Oaks and St. Leger at the Auckland Racing Club's Easter meeting will be very poor, as the final payments do not suggest any of the other runners as capable of making Desert Gold go three-quarter pace. ■ ' Mr, E. J. Watt's gelding Sea Pink, by Sea ton Delaval-Rose Madder, was offered at auction in Molbourno at the close of the Victoria Racing Club's meeting, but failed to find a, purchaser. His recent form has not been such as to cause any great rush to acquire him. Sir George Clifford has sold-the two-year-'old gelding-Masterstroke, by Treadmill—Madowla. to Mr. H. A. Knight and ho will in future be trained by P., D. .Tones. Masterstroke grew so fast that no attempt was made to train .him for two-year-old emragements. He was broken in last autumn, after wjiioh he was gelded and given a spell. He is a full-brother to Discipline and Taskmaster, two useful gallopers,, pd is the last of the progeny of Madowla, whose stock, almost without exception, performed well on the racecourse. • ■ -\dvices from Napier state that Kooya was lame in the shoulder after some schooling exercise last week, and that, the chestnut horse Tavistock • has also gone wrong, and will have to be 6pelled.
