GLOOMY FEELING IN . WASHINGTON For the first time on record a Zeppelin raiding England has been brought down and destroyed. Tho, raider thus accounted for was tho Lls, a big naval airship of recent construction. , She was one of fivo Zeppelins which raided the English eastern counties Friday night.and killed and injured a number of people. Tho LIS was crippled by gun-fire, and ultimately fell in the Thames «stuary, where she sank. The Verdun battle has been renewed in something like its former fury, the Germans attaekin g violently both east and west of the Meuse. Many of the attacks completely failed, but the enemy has captured one village and gained a footing in portion of another. Floods are still hindering operations in the Eastern theatre, but the Russians liavo repulsed enemy attacks in Southern Russia and Galicia. Tho cables between England and Holland have been cut, and it is reported that a state of acute tension and anxiety obtains in the latter country. Turkey is reported to have tried within a mouth to induce Great Britain to negotiate a separate peace.
