Norwich claims the oldest public library in England, founded by a bequest" of books to the city corporation in 1608 This collection has an unbroken record of use until the present day, when it is incorporated in the ISorwicli Public Library. Bristol Ims bad afree public library since 1615, whilst ManChester also has had-lho free use of the splendid Clietham Library, bequeathed to the city by Sir Humphrey Chetham, since 1653.
