RECRUITING DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT

Interest in the fighting at Verdun, which had been lulled by the collapse of the German onset, has been reawakened by the news that the French have initiated an offensive with a successful assault on the German positions at Avocourfc Wood, the inevitable counterattacks being completely repulsed. Further successes are reported from the northern sections of the .Russian line, but the thaws of oncoming spring have released the penf-up waters and flooded the lowlying country. A Russian success in Galicia is also reported. The Russian Minister for "War has been allowed to resign, at his own request. Over in Asia Minor, the Russians successfully held furious attacks by the Turks, inflicting enormous losses. The situation on. the Salonika lines is developing into one of tension, and an early resumption of hostilities is expected. Heavy fighting is reported on the Italian front, where a terrific onset by the Austrians, -near Gorizia, bent the Italian centre, but the 'ground was imme- ' diately recovered. Public agit&tion over the recruiting question has evoked a Ministerial statement in the House of Commons, and some aTscussion. The American Press is assuming an angry tono in regard to the-German piratical warfare.
