HARBOUR BOARD CHARGES
THE TARIFF INCREASED. x The Wellington Harbour Board decided last evening that in order to provide further revenue required, the following increases in the tariff should be approved:—lni\*.rd wharfage on all general cargo, 'Id.' per ton;- outward wharfage, 2d. por ton; transhipment wharfage, 6d. per ton; harbour improvement rate on inward and T/S cargo (except coal and ballast), ,6d. per ton. Mr. J. G.. Cobbe objected to the charges on phosphatio manures being increased.
Mr. R. Fletcher said the charges on the handling of phosphates had recently been increased, and the board was now handling these goods at a dead loss. Mr. Cobbe: The board was not represented when- the increase was decided on.
The chairman (Mr. C. E. Daniell): That's rather rough on me. I was sent to represent the l)oard. Mr. Cobbe: I will sny that at one time you used to represent the board. I am not sure now whether you are going to bo a Labour candidate at next election. (Loud laughter.) The chairman: We will seo who is candidate for Feilding at next election. Mr. Cobbe said ho wished to point out that these manures woro used to increase productivity of the country, and that increased exports benefited tho board, and yet the board was putting up the tariff on phosphates.
