PAHIATUA MEETINC j DISCUSSION WINS BIG EVENT. By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent. Pahiatua, March 29. The Pahiatua Racing Club's annual race meeting was held in fine weather and bel'oro a. largo attendance. The totalisator handled .£9531, as compared with -£tiSOO last year. In tho Hack Hurdles Negative stripped well, but Jackman was obviously above himself, and in the race his nder refrained from unduly exerting him. At the start Kuropotangi and Negative led from Jackman and Brunswick. At the back of tho course the last-named ran up to Kuropotangi, and, holding his own, he won easily. Negative, who broke down, was fifty yards away third, and then came Ulysses and Manitoba, who had been together the whole way. 1 Jackman fell at the last fence.

Detroit, ridden by W. Young, was made a good favourite in the Maiden Race, and he just won from Silverstream (Boris—Pemican), who was a bit unlucky at the start. Another unlucky runner was the well-backed Orianda. Trickery ran a fair race, but could only finish third, and Altercation also ran well in fourth place, being just a head off Humourist, who showed a lot of pace, but hung out at the homo bend, and tired in the straight. In. the Welter Hack Handicap Consultation, St. Omer, and Lady Nolan were evenly backed, and the race resulted in a very close finish, Lord Laddo, who had been in front the whole way, winning by half a length from Lady Nolan, with Glenarch a h<md tiway, ind then in a line Came Consultation and St. Omer. The winner seems to be a useful horse, and it was a good performance to carry lOst. 91b. and lead the whole way. An inquiry was held into tho running of St. Omer, and S. Eeid was warned to rido his mounts right out.

The Summit was the best-backed of tho five runners in the big Handicap, but he' failed to get a place, the winner turning up in Discussion, who i-as well handled by A. Head, and gained a lot of', ground on the homo turn by getting through on' the fence when the leaders hung out. Mystified and Despatch Carrier made the running to the straight entrance, where' Discussion ran into the lead, and Combustion also moved up, but had no chance with the Waipawa mare, who won easily. Otter (C. Price) was ft warm order in the Konini Hack Handicap, and taking charge after going a, furlong he ran in a winner by half a dozen lengths from Whisperer, who beat Maroetotara by a length. Trickery and Kaiserine finished in that order. Black Lupin had a very easy victory in the Makuri Welter, for which he started a hot favourite. He was only oppiwed by lit. Victoria (who led for half a mile), Montreal, and Moudjik, and his win was received with cheers, as his owner ■is * popular local sportsman. Modjik was offered for sale after the race, but ra passed in. The biggest field of the day contested tho Telephone Hack Handicap. Otter had a 51b. penalty, and he was again made favourite, closely followed by Rewa Kevra, while Martlet ran' the pair close. Rewa Rewa was the quickest to find h"~ feet, and the whole way Goldbearing and Martlet. were at the head of the others, but Consultation finished fast, and just beat this pair for second money. Fore and Lord Laddo were evenly backed in the concluding event, and after a very chequered run, the first-named scored with a late run. Lord Laddo made play till inside the distance, when the field bunched, and, after a great finish, Fore won by a neck. There was .some bumping'just after the start of the race. An inquiry was held, and T. Pritchnrd, rider, of Lord Laddo, was fined ifis. HANDICAP HACK HURDLES. One mile and a half.
