GERMANS HURRIEDLY REINFORCING

HEAVY FIGHTING . ON ITALIAN r FRONT ' , i The lull on the Western front, following the intense activity at Verdun, is relieved to-day by a welcome piece of news from tlie British front. Two lines of the enemy's trenches liave been carried by assault, with'heavy casualties to the Germans. Farther along the line, be- , fcween the Sonnne and the Avrp, an attempted surprise by the Germans ended in a,fiasco. Meanwhile Belgium; says Amsterdam, is being depleted of Landsturm troops, who are badly needed for the Bus- - sian theatre, where the unremitting vigour of the Muscovite offensive is pressing tho Teuton hard. Conflicting reports are to hand from this theatre, and the same is to be 6aid of the reports of heavy fighting on th.e Italian front, where a particularly sanguinary battle has waged for the possession of one of the Italian sectors. Aerial activity is re- \ ported from the Balkans. Further reports are to hand concerning the aero-naval fight off the North Frisians, and here again there is a distinct conflict of and German—as to the material results of the fight. The Sussex outrage has been followed by the torpedoing of other vessels—altogether some twenty vessels have been sunk during the last twelve days. One of the latest victims is the 13,000-ton liner Minneapolis, part of the crew of which vessel have landed at Malta. The United States Government is now facing one of these unpalatable cases whioh in the past have evoked Presidential ■Notes.
