NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBr Qle.scos.T Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the AVelliugton Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close on. Friday next. Winners ait the Pahiatua meeting will not be penalised at Trentham. . Jt looks as if C. Emerson is going to make a bold bid to bead the winning jockey's list this season. After the Bulls meeting he, went south and caught the Timai'u second day, and rode three' winHoi's, making his total for. the season 41. J. O'Shca rode three winners at Bulls, and cno at Ohinemuri on Saturday, while B. Deeley rode one at Bulls and two at Ohinemuri. The contest between the trio named is causing a lot of interest throughout the Dominion. Kooya, Penniless, and El Gallo have been scratched for all engagements at tho Wellington Racing Olub's Autumn Meeting. Probably ±\lr. W. J. Ralph" has decided on a short spell for El Gallo before the jumping season starts, and Penniless is hardly class enough for metropolitan courses. ' Tatrobas is the first horse to win- the Gaulfield Guineas, • V.R.C., Derby, Melbourne Cup, and V.R.C. St. Leger. Much, interest was evinced in .'the appearance of the weights for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, for, the purpose of comparing the adjustments of Mr. Morse with those of the Wellington handicapper. Though, the Auckland weight adjuster has started on a 21b. lower scale the handicaps in the main agree. The annual meeting of tho Pahiatua Racing Club will be held on the club's course to-morrow. Numerically the fields aro good but the class is.not high, and several of the horses have dual engagements, and doubtless many of them will be saddled up twice during the afternoon. The firit event is the Hack Hurdles, in ■ which Jaokman, list. 31b., is top-weight. The steeplechaser has not been up long, and will probably be in want of a race. A similar remark applies to Negative, lOst. 41b., and Black Lupin may be reserved for the Makuri Welter Handicap. Brunswick, 9st. 91b., has been showing fair form of late, and lie may bo seasoned, enough by now to settle those opposed to" hinii B. Deeley is coming from Auckland to ride Humorist in tho Maiden race, and the other Trentham candidate, Trickery, will have A. Reed in the saddle. The last named ran five furlongs in lmin. tec. at Trentham on Saturday, and he may finish on better than Humorist, but Detroit (W. Bell) has his second to Martial Air at Daririevirke to recommend him, and this form appears to be the-best, for Martial Air has won at her last four starts. Fore will be ridden by A. Oliver in tho Welter Handicap, seven furlongs, and backers may make H. King's, chargo the machine favourite. There aro eleven acceptors in tho race, but the field will probably thin out considerably. The Pahiatua Handicap, one mile and a quarter, is the principal event of the day.- Given fine weather The Summit, Bst., may be able to hold. his own, but on a heavy track Discussion may act the best. If reserved for the Makuri Welter Han. dicap Black Lupin may be a good favourite, for the lot opposed- to him is very weak, and in the Telephone Handicap, five furlongs, Ohiwai, 9st* 31b., has only slb. more than she had when she made the field look very cheap at Master-ton. ~ Rerehau" was tried over a couple 'of hurdles at Trentham last week, but she could not be got to jump. As she has not competed in a jumping event, tho Maniapoto mare will be ineligible to start in the Jumpers' Flat Handicaps at Wellington. " The victory of Penniless at the Rangitikoi meeting gives his sire, Penury, Lthe distinction of having all the stocksired by him which have been asked to carry silk returned as winners. Tho acceptances received for the first totalisator meeting of the Taumarunui Racing Club, which takes place on Saturidy next, Anril 1, are considerably above ' (lie average, land the club looks like making, a most auspicious entry into tho racing world. C. Price has been engaged to ride Montana in his Wellington engagements, Desert Gold and Nones are likely to meet once again in the Awanuni Gobi Cup. to be decided at tho Mauawatu meeting, but those who wero looking forworn, to seeing Panmuro pitted against the noir are likolj to be disappointed.
