PETONE COTJNCII, MEETS. A meeting of tho Powne Borough Council was held last evening, when there wore present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors List, Cox, Forsyth, BrockiebnnU, Jones, Anderson, M.'Keiizie, M'JDougall, and Trueman.. Tho Makarn County Council wrote in reference to a nuisance on the Hiitt Koad (which the Petono Council had referred to previously), and suggested that the matter be l ' referred to tho Health Department and tho Htitt Koad Board, as the locality appeared to ho beyond the Makara boundary. It was resolved to call the attention of the Health' Department to the matter. The Heretaunga Boating Club applied for permission to erect skids in front ol their boat shed, and it was decided to accede to the request, subject to' the engineer's approval. Tho Prime-Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey) stated that it was tho intention of the Government to ask Parliament to amend the War Pensions' Act, where experience lias shown it to be necessary. He also asked the .council to explain what it meant by the phrase •'that pensions shall be granted to soldiers' dependents as of right," and inquired what was ' the council's interpretation of the word "dependents.' This matter was left in the hands of the executive officers to reply to. It was resolved to reply to a letter from the chairman of tho Becruiting Board to the effect that the council considered that the appointment of recruiting officers for the various districts throughout New Zealand (preferably returned soldiers) would he more suitable for recruiting purposes. A communication from the superintendent of the State Advances Office in respect to the payment of the council's contribution to the Hutt Road was held over for further consideration. Tho Gas Committee reported that the i engineer had oesn instructed to effect repairs to the 'c-dttago it the g.-.sworks, at a cost not exceeding £40. Negotiations were propeeding between the committee and the stokers regarding/tue latter's wages. It also recommended that the price of coal should bo increased by a similar amount to the increase in the cost, that 'tar be Gd. per gallon not, and that coke be 245. per ton at tho works. The Reserves Committee recommended that a piece of ground be set aside for the use of tho Ngaroma Croquet Club on terms to be arranged. That the charges for the use of tho Public Bowling Green should bo: £1 Is. for a season ticket, and (Id. per game; tennis, courts, £1 Is. for a season ticket for men, 10s. 6d. for ladies, and 6d. petset ; croquet court, 10s. 6d. for a season ticket, and 3d. per game. That 8 sets of bowls .be /procured, ana that 'a charge of 3d. per set be made for the uso of same. That a sum be placed upon next year's estimates for the provision of a'pavilion with, the necessary lockers, and that the sum of 2s. 6d. be charged for tho use of the lockers. The reports wero adopted. MEETINC OF HUTT COUNCIL. There were present at last evening's meeting of the Hutt Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin), and Councillors Hodgins, Meldrnm, 'Carver, Brassel, Clendon, M'Dougall, Heron, Ball, and Hobbs. In connection with a request from Mrs. L. Glover to be allowed to erect a house on a section -which was short of the required measurement - by 4ft., it was decided to refer the matter to the council's solicitor. The Onslow Borough Council wrote in reference to the use of the Hutt Road footpath and cyclo 'track,.and it was decided to support the movement' to prohibit tho use of the footpath as a cyclo track. The superintendent of tho State Advances Office -wrote -with reference to the' amount of £8400, allocated to the council'under the first schedule of tho Hutt Road Act, 1915, and asking whe- . tber n tho council proposed to pay the amount or to arrange for the issue of debentures in the manner provided by tho above-mentioned Act. It was also requested that prompt steps should be taken to comply with' tho requirements, and attention was called to the provisions of Sub-section 8' of Section 3. It was decided to authorise 'the Mayor and Town Clerk to take the necessary steps towards raising debentures -for ' the amount for 50 years, at 5 per cent., including 1 per cent, sinking finnt A discussion ensued over a notice of motion by Councillor ,Brassel in reference to the uso of tho councils tarspraying plant. The mover suggested that the Mayor (according to informaj.tion he had received) had granted permission for the use of the plant. .Sub--1 scqiJently Councillor Brassel decided to irithdraw, this portion of the motion, and amended it to read, "That this council disapproves of the -use of its tarspraying plant on Sundays, and that in future permission be granted for the private use of. same on condition that -it be not used on Sundays." This was agreed to. A further motion by Councillor M'Dougall, "That before tho tar-spray-ing plant is lent, application shall be made to and dealt with by the No. 1 Committee, with power,, to'act," was considered, and carried on the casting vote of the Mayoi. The engineer's report stated that one connection had been made with the water mains, making the total to date 1013. Two permits had been issued under the drainage and. sanitary by-laws, making the total to date 916. ■ The expenditure for the fortnight ending "March 18, 1916, had been as follows :—District fund account, £155 12s. Bd.; gas account, £9 195. ( 5d.; total, £165 12s. Id.
