AIR RAID ON GHEVGELI
Athons, March 26. Twenty-two French aeroplanes yesterday bombed and seriously damaged the Gorman camp at Ghevgeli. German aviators pursued them, and brought down a French machine in Greek territory. The pilots rescued the machineguns, mid brought down a German machine, which fell into Lake Doiran, The occupants were drowned.
STRONG, GERMAN OFFENSIVE. ' ' (Rec. March 27, 9.50 ; p.m.) Athens, March 26. It is SGmi-o/licially_ stated that the German's have begun a strong offers sive in tlio Doirati region, and that the French are successfully resisting the attack. The Greek Government is doing its utmost to hasten the evacuation of the civilians from the fighting zone, especially at Ghovgheli, -which M. Draco*nis, tlio Finance Minister, describes as on the eve of an invasion by the Central Powers. THE FUTURE OF THE NARROW STRAITS. Petrograd, March' 26. M. MiliukofF, speaking in the Duma, said that the Allies in April had satisfactorily settled the question of tlio* Straits of Dardanelles. Russia realised the importance of this outlet. She could not prosper without an open sea. It was not n question whether the Straits should become Russiau or Turkishthey . must not become German. ASKING A LITTLE TOO MUOH OF THE TURK.Athens, March 26. The Germans and Bulgarians proposed to occupy Constantinople and send the Turks to the Caucasus and Bagdad. An' officer on a warship of! the Dardanelles at the beginning of tho month writes: —"Back at our old haunts. Gallipoli is a dead horse now, and we do not much enjoy flogging it. They have plenty of guns along tin coast, and judging by the oxcellent practice, all are manned by Huns. Gallipoli now seems to be a country of ghosts. One misses the übiquitous shrapnel, the life of .the beaches, the tents, the smoke of the camp fires. It is a depressing place haunted by the spectres of a great army." ' THE CAMPAIGN IN THE CAUCASUS The High Commissioner reports:—• London, March 27, 3.85 p.m. "In the Caucasus, the Turks are being hotly pursued; the Russians are advancing considerably in the district south-east of Bitlis."
