The above plan shows fairly well the proposed route of party, and also the direction of some of the minor exploring expeditions 'planned. From a . base at Weddell Sea, where Shackleton himself landed 'from the Endurance, the main expedition was to start and traverse the "reat Antarctic waste to M'Murdo Sound, where the other part of the, expedition in the Aurora was to establish >its base. The journey from Weddell Sea to M'Murdo Sound ,is about 1700 miles, and the South Pole is in the line of march.. The Aurora party waß to havo established fuel and food depots- over the last 300 miles of the journey to assist tne trans-Continental party, and whether' or not they have been able to do so, will be a matter of grave concern. It is not yet known whether the parties which were landed from the Aurora before she was blown away into the packice had carried out the task before this misfortune overtook them, or whether sufficient provisions had been landed to enable it to bo done as proposed. The party landed under Shackleton at the AVeddell Sea base was to have conducted explorations towards Graham'B Land and Enderby Land — both of which are shown on the plan—in addition to the greater exploration traversing the Antarctic Continent, '
