Admiralty reports are issued of a naval engagement fought in the North Sea at the end of February. The German cruiser Greif, a sister ship to the Moewe, was sunk, but the same fate overtook tho British auxiliary cruiser Alcantara The Greif was sunk by gunfire; the Alcantara was torpedoed, apparently by a submarine. A continued lull appears to obtain at Verdun, but in the other main theatre the Russians are developing a vigorous offensive in the Baltio Provinces. At several points they have captured powerfully fortified enemy positions. Important progress is Teported by General Smuts in the East African campaign. Extracts are given from a Parliamentary statement, in which'the Secretary of State for India admitted that the Mesopotamian campaign grew until it exceeded its resources. Control of the campaign has now been transferred to the Imperial General Staff. A Salonika report declares that fighting on the northern Greek frontier is developing into a general engagement. A' passenger ship, carrying Belgian' refugees, mostly women and children, has been torpedoed in the English Channel.
