ARE THEY SHIRKERS?
Sir.—During the past six months Bcorea of young men have found their way to tho Howard goldfields, not in the hope of iinding employment (of whioh there is a good deal offering), hut in the hope of getting as far away from the recruiting office as tliey possibly can. Since the rush sot in over 18 months 'ago, only seven men. have left this district for active service. To the writer's knowledge there are at present 102 men on the goldfields, 68 of whom are under •(5 years of ago, the majority being buWeou 20 and 36 years, and single. It iB no uncommon sight to see three and four young fellows in ono camp, and every week there are fresh arrivals. At a camp on tho Maud and Maggie goldfield, about five miles from the Howard, there is auotlier batch of men, and in a few days a recruiting officer would make a good haul. —I am. etc., BRITISHER. [The camps referred to aro in the Nelson district.]
