Thursday's 'Auckland "Herald" states: "A serious accident occurred at Flat Island, Great Barrier, at about two o'clock yesterday afternoon, when n fisherman named Charles lleid, a widower, 36 years of age, lost his right hand as the result of an explosion of dynamito. The injured man was engaged in blasting logs for battens for crayfish pots, in "company with his brother, Albert lleid, of Ilayden Street. They had placed thrco charges, each consisting of four plugs of the explosive, in a large.log, and fired them. Thinking that all the charges had been exploded. Charles lleid returned to tlio log, when ;i further oxplosion occurred, lleid receiving almost the full force of it. Tho unfortunate man's right hand was blown off to a. point two or three inches above the wrist, and h'i6 left arm and throat were severely burned, His condition ia not considered to bo critJcal." ■
