WOMAN'S WORLD
, (Continued from Page 2.) I Cerman Propaganda in* Ghina. > In tho course of an interview with s Professor Hcwitson, who has just rei turned to Dunedin from a visit to i China and Japan, a representative of • tho "Outlook" was told by the Proi fessor that tho Germans are carrying ■ on a very activo propaganda in China. i In Shanghai they publish in English a ■ paper called "The War," giving their i own account of what is going on, and ! this is sent through the post- to people ' in various parts of thp empire. It had i been discussed whether it would be i wise on the part of tho British to make i any reply, but leading Chinese mer--1 chants'in one of tho ports advised that. , nothing should be done, for they said i that sufficient answer to the German i claims of supremacy was to be found ; in the fact of the German ships lying interned in the harbour. Tho Gert mans have shown in China, as else.where, their marvellous thoroughness. In Canton, oil the British and French concessions, the finest- buildings beyond comparison are German. Professor Hewitson saw copies of a document is-.' sued in connection with a movement started some two or three years ago to raise largo sums of money with the object of getting German taught in tho schools. The Gefmans were chafing' nnder the knowledge that English was the ruling foreign language in China, and they hold that trade followed tlie language. They offered a considerable sum of money to the Basle Mission if it would undertake to have German taught in its schools, but the offer waa declined. "Charley's' Aunt," "Charley's Aunt," which was "played in the Grand Opera House last evening for the, benefit of the Hostel funds, is an evergreen favourite, and although many of those who formed tho audience last evening must have seen it played more than once before, it was apparently almost as much enjoyed as when it first was played. Naturally so, perhaps, as in an amateur .performance there is always a strong personal appeal to tho audiencc. ' Some pretty frocks were worn for the occasion. Miss Har-dinge-Maltby as Donna Lucia D'Alvadorez first appeared in an afternoon costume of black silk voile draped over black silk, with touches of peacock green, the little zouave bodice opening over a lace vest, and finished with a very deep collar of lf.ee. With it. was worn a- turban toque, trimmed with an aigrette, the colours of which were again peacock green to match the green worn with tho gown. In the next act Miss Ivlaltby appeared in a pretty frock of lilac charmeuse, made with a threetiered skirt of lace and insertion, the -bodice also draped with lace, and finished with a high waist-belt of Indian embroidery, made of steel and turquoise. Miss Ruby Scott, who took the. part of Kitty Verdun, made her first appearance in a- simply-made frock of white voile, with, which .was _wom a- broad waist-bolt of pale blue silk. Her black velvet hat also had touches of blue, being trimmed with pale blue ribbon and liluo roses. In the next act she wore a very pretty evening frock of i>ale bluo glaco ' taffetas, the deeoly-scalloped edges of the skirt disolaying a very-frilled underskirt of net, caught, with clusterp of 1 pale blue and pink roses.- The bodice was also of net, daintily trimmed with 1 .touches of-.pale .blue !\nd pink. Miss i Pauline Brown as Ella Dela-hay, and ' Miss Marie Fix as Amy Spettigue, also I wore oretty frocks, the formei-j looking i daintily -fresh in white, and tlie latter i wearing first of : all a black gown and i later nink. . . « '
The marriage took place in Knox Church, Masterton. on 'Wednesday, of Miss Dorothy. Jorgensen, daughter of Mr. P. C. Jorgensen, of Masterton, to Mr. J. Brown. Miss Violet'Jensen was bridesmaid, and Sir. P. Adams was best man.
The concert given in ths Salvation Army's Hall at Trent-bam' last night was 'a great', success, judging from tho enthusiasm of the, audience. The programme was given by Mrs. E. ft. Oyr, Misses Dall and Gow, Messrs. Orr, Hill, Mell, and Reeves, and was arranged by Mr. Culford Bell, under the auspices of the Natives' Association. ■ •
