PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE

DISTRICT CONFERENCE ON FRIDAY. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Messrs, W. Ferguson, Jas. Macintosh, C. G. Wilson, A. Marryatt, O. R. Smith, and El. Seaton wero present at a meeting of the Mayor's Patriotic Committee, held on Tuesday afternoon.

A letter was received from the Hon. G. W. Russell stating that tlio con, ference of Patriotic Societies had been fixed to be field at Palmerston North on Friday noxt, instead of Wellington, as it would enable delegates from the north of Palmerston North to get' homo the same evening. Mr. J. P. Luke was appointed a delegate to represent tho Mayor's Patriotic Committee, and ho was given power to appoint another delegate to accompany him.

• The War League had incurred cxpen. diture to the amount of £9 in furthering the same objects as the committee, and the Mayor thought ho would be right in moving that the committee pay that amount. That was agreed to.

Mr. C. R. Smith read n letter from Quartermaster-Sergeant Radcliffe, of the Uli.niaroa, acknowledging in the warmest terms the receipt of a number of cases of fruit sent on to that vessel before she left "Wellington. Major Jordan also wrote to tho Mayor acknowledging the receipt of fruit sent on board transjwrts in Wellington.

In regard to tho conference, to bo hold at Palmerston North this week, Mr. Marryatt asked .whether the expenses of such conferences wore borno by tho patriotic funds. Tho Mayoi stated that he thought that on nearly every occasion each member paid hi a own oxpemes. tn. the case of conferences held in Wellington the council hud always given the- room, free of charge, and had never demurred, even to allowing him to use tho council's own postage stamps for patriotic business, so that rea'iv very little expense had been incurred.
