YOUTH'S CAREER OF THEFT

Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of .the Magistrate's Court, when Leonard Godfrey Jellie, IG years of• age, pleaded guilty to several charges, of theft, one of the charges relating to a sum of £9 in money. Inspector Hindrey appeared for the police, while Mr. P. W. Jacksonappeared for Jellie, who was over the age which would permit of his being tried in the Juvenile, Court. Inspector Heudrey • informed the Court that the lad's homo was in Gisbeme, but he ran away and came to Wellington, all tho crimes being com. mitted 6ince his arrival here a short time ago. Ho had fobbed his friends, his master, and his mates, and had deposited ,the proceeds of his crimes in the Savings Bank. The inspector suggested ' that Jellie should be sent to gaol,- with tho recommendation that he be transferred to an industrial school.

Mr. Jackson' pleaded for leniency. If probation could not be; granted, it might be sufficient to convict the accused and order him /to come up for sentence when called upon.

The Magistrate imposed a sentence of a month's imprisonment, the lad to bo kept apart from other prisoners, and his case to be brought under tho .notice of the authorities, with a recommendation that he be s§nt to an industrial school.' An order was made for the return of -the £9 in money stolen.

ALLEGED HOUSE OF ILL-FAME.

Hearing was continued of the case in which Pauline Alice Russell was charged with acting in the conduct of a* house of ill-fame in Frederick Street in contravention of tho City by-laws. Arthur Russell was at.the same time charged under the Justice of the Peace Act with permitting premises, - occupied by him, to bo used for the purposes of S restitution. Tho case for the defence ad just been opened by Mr. P. TV. Jackson when the hearing was further adjourned until to-day. OTHER CASES. Andrew Williamson, for drunkenness, was lined 205., in default to undergo three days' imprisonraont. Three firstoffenders were also dealt with.
