RANGITIKEI MEETING CUP WON BY EEWI POTO. ■■.."'. '■.'■' '' / >• By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.) /-.'" Bulls, March 22. The Rangitikei Club's annual - meeting, opened. to-uay, in cloudy weather. Tho. tourso was in good order, and thero was a large attendance. The. handled j>l4,Gßl, -against on the tamo day last year. The Trial Plate field was not a good lot, and the general supposition was that Penniless and Golden Grafton stood One above the- others, and they were' heavily backed. "Oliver was on the former, and J. O.'Shea oh the New. Plymouth maro. The latter had been galloping well at home, but had Been feeding badly since arriving here. Silver Webb (Hatch) be-' gan quickest, and led the two favourites and Starejo to the entrance. Golden Grafton- got on to Silver Webb's heels at the start, but got out in time to beat the Hawera horse by a neck. Penniless was a -length away, arid ] Starejo canio nest.> .'■ Depredation, who struck himself early in the week, was withdrawn from the Scott Mempiial Handicap, leaving six runners. At the horns turn Downhara
came through, and won. with a bit to spare from Limpet, who was well, clear ; of the other, quartet,' who finished in a lin». Vladineau was placed third. Lady Middleton shaped badly, and was in the rear the whole way. Limpet added another second to her already long list of rrinor places, but sha looks like doing better at her next start. , ■ Tarero s triDped remarkably well m the Hack Hurdles, and after a good race the black gelding won from. Queens Post, who just.beat Brunswick, with Nita and Roseblush right do: Portland Lady and ~ Queen's Post were in front for a circuit, when the .Porirua mare fell back and. Queen* Post piloted a bunched field to the last fence; but here Torero had her meaBuro, and won nicely in the run home. Austin shaped: well,'and was prominent for a mile and a. half. Bivouac, was tailed off the whole way. Queen s Post was a good favourite on the machine, although she was having her first run over fences this'season. . ' . Tho Carnarvon Hack race resulted m a boil-over for Rewa Rswa (A. Reed), who slipped the field when the barrier rose, arid after a close finish just lasted long enough to win by a head from Glorifv and Paraoa, The last named caught * the tapes at the barrier-rise, or he would have won easily.' .Heads only separated the placed horses Ticino was fourth, and Whisperer fifth. . Ueiv-i Poto and El Gallo were backed in that order for the Cup, and tho public were well on the mark, for the pair .finished in the order indicated on the machine *Vt the start Camneador led Square Deal and the two favourites, but at the half-mile Square Deal an<i TJewi Poto cleared away by themselves. Square Deal cried enough at the straight entrance, and O'Shea brought 7 El Gallo along, but the whin was requisitioned on Itevn Poto, arid, ridden right wit, he held El Gallo in the run to the post. Princess Moutoa was . two lengths awav, and then came Square Deal, Maniai-M, and Campeador. The first hoisted the number of bquare Deal in third place; but later on; after a word with the stipendiary steward, the number of Princess Moutoa was put up. A tier the face C. Price, rider of the winner ""received a gold-mounted<whip, presented by Mr. -las. Bull, who, owing to a ' bereavement, was not present. Veto, a winner at Onunake, was ia T o,ur. ite in the Hack Welter Handicap, but E h« went under before the Porirua-trained Scrutineer, who was in at the minimum, anothar well-backed candidate, was■ uromtaent. all;the way, but at the fim'=h" was cnt out of tbird place by Dood, who did not get a gcod run. and came from a-long war back. Florist was prominent for half a mile, but she was then dono w'th. Parerewere was quietly fanc'ifd'br the local people, but after showuiff ont for a bit ho went back, and finished in the ruck. ' The Pukenui Welter Handicap was the most even betting race of the day. Byron - iumped out clear, and led a bnnched fiold into the straight, but here Crawford, who had been on the bit the whole war, came round on the outside, and won m a ho'.W fashion from Romania. Lneurn twss third, and then came Byron. Vladian wa= tailed off the-'whole way. _ Carlvsian. a good favourite, scored in the concluding event from Interlude, who onnld not go the pace in the first T>art. but finished on surprisingly well. Madame Ristori and Moutoa Queen were in charge to the bend, where the favourite took charge, • and won easily.
