FAREWELL TO REV. MR. SLADE
A pleasant gathering of members of the Methodist Church at Island Bay, was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. W. H. Potts presiding. A number of items were' rendered by musical friends, and a delightful evening ' was spent. The immediate object of the gathering was to bid farewell to the Rev. Mr. Slade, who has acted as minister to the_ South '■Wellington Circuit, in succession to his father, recently compelled by failing health to retire from active (service; Mr. Slade, who is pursuing ail academic career, was presented in tho course of the evening with a sum of money to be expended in the purchase of books likely to be usoful to him_ in his academic and theological studies. The presentation Miaile by Mr. Prince, on behalf of the congregation, who had readily subscribed to the fund, and- in the course of his remarks Mr. Princo voiced the general feeling _ of esteem and affwtion for the departing minister, whoso earnestness and culture have won for him the highest esteem and regard. Mr. Slado acknowledged the kindness of the congregation in an appropriate speech. He leaves for his now sphere at Otahu almost immediately.
I H. Ernest Leigkton, in conjunction with Messrs. Longmore and Co., will offer for public auction, at 2.15 p.m. to-day, in the Chamber of Commerce, Wellington, a factory or warehouse site, situated »t the corner of Taranaki and York Streets;also on the same day and place, a seven-roomed house in Central Terrace, ICelburn, and a six-roomed house in Drumniond Street. Full details appear in onr auction column. Considerable historical interest attaches to the property at Lower Hutt, whioh is being offered for sale to-day in Hie Chambe.' of Commerce, Wellington, by Mr. Lcigliton. It formed part of the Crown grant to Sir William Fitsihorbert, and afterwards passed by hia daughter 1 !; marriage to Sir Patrick Buckley, who resided tkero till his death. The adventures and stirring incidents of tho earlv settlement were often recounted at Sir WilHum's'- table, oiul in. provincial days the "three Fs" (Poatherston, l r ox, and F;tzhevbert) used to meet at the Hutt to fettle the affairs of State. The houso wiw I'.ceidentiilly destroyed by fire about two years ago, but the beautiful ornamental grounds have been kept up.
