Mr. : G. C. Stuart, who convened the meeting, explained' that it ;was proposed to form a league : to further, the referendum, question before the next election.' He subsequently answered a number of questions. , , A resolution was : next moved in favour, of setting, up ;a. committee to obtain details, cf the question and report to a later meeting. This was supplanted.by an amendment in the following terms:—"That, feeing .there is already in New Zealand a political body ■which has the referendum as a plank jn its platform, this-meeting does, not deem it advisable to start another party and so split up the ranks'of Labour." The amendment was carried by 19 Totes to. 16. ■' . '.
