' It is reported, states the "Shipping List." that tho big three-masted ship Milverton, 2070 tons net register, now at Newcastle, lids been fixed to load coal for Callao at 50s. per ton. So far, this is stated to be the biggest figure ever paid for a vossol like the Milverton for this business, and if she carrios out tho chafer her freight should amount to something like £8200. NOVEL OIL SHIPS. , Cigar-shaped ships, carrying each 20,000 tons of oil, will probably be used to bring oil to England from America in the near future, says the "Daily Chronicle." They will travel under water, or, at least, in an almost submerged position, and be towed across the ocean by steamers. It has been found that'a submerged > vessel can be towed much more easily than an ordinary vessel of the 6amo size, this being duo to tho fact th>.t the vessel is, even in its surface position, almost entirely submerged; and the discovery has been made use of in tho design of the new gigantic oilcarriers. Another novelty will bo the permanent storage of large quantities of oil under -water. Ordinary oil etorago tanks are splendid marks for big guns, and are also vulnerable to attack from the air. The new method consists in sinking large steel- cylinders filled with oil in an artificial lake, the oil being pumped m or out as required. An air chamber in eaoh oylinder provides means for raising it to the surface.
PATRIOTIC SHIPPING COMPANY. An extract from the annual report of the Houlder Line seems to be well worth quoting. The- report stated, inter alia, that owing to the abnormal conditions still existing as a/result of the war, there had been a great interruption in commercial work at the shipbuilding centres, ds a result of which the new twin-screw stonmer contracted for iu 1914 -was yet unavailable, and it would pi'obably be some months before delivery could bo Eccured. The whole of the refrigerated steamers of the company's fleet were requisitioned by the Board of Trade in the early part of 1915, and several of the general cargo vessels had also .been requisitioned by the Admiralty. While these factors have prevented the company from securing the full benefits of the extraordinarily high market rates of freight, it -will bo source of gratification to the proprietors that so large a proportion of the company's property has been of use and benefit to the country during these times of national stress.
