FINDING EMPLOYMENT
FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS.
At the last meeting of the council of the Central_ Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Geo. Winder complained that good business men wore being given billets by the Government who were already, in steady employment, and regretted that this was so, in view of the many / able and willing . young fellows who were returning from tho war, and want-ed-work. The Prime Minister was written to on the subject, and at the meeting of the Council of the Chamber, held yesterday, Mr. Massey's reply, which was as follows, was read:— "In reply to your letter of 24th ult., I beg to inform you that it has already been laid down that all things being equal, returned soldiers are to be given the preference In connection with vacancies in tho Public Service. If you will be good enough to supply me with tho names of persons taken from good positions in business houses in 'Wellington and employed in ,the Government service, in preference to returned soldiers, I shall bo glad to forward your representations to. the Public Service Commissioner for, consideration.—Yours faithfully, W. F., Massey." \ > .' , Mr. Winder said ho was in an awkward positon, and though he knew of cases —positive cases —he could not reveal names in public, but was prepared to do so in committee.
It was resolved to reply to tho effect that the council was glad to have the assurance of tho Prime Minister that the question was receiving attention.
