FRENCH DESTROYER 'SUNK
Evidence is increasing, say the cabled reports front the Western front, that the fury of the German onslaught on Verdun has spent itself, and that German hopes have been shattered on the invincible defences. There has been another sharp fight in the Hohenzollern redoubt, and, the Germans have succeeded in retaking the three craters which were seized, tyy the British after a big mine coup early in the month. According to a German communique the Russians have opened a violent offensive on the Dvina front; another statement has it that the Germans are energetically, working on the technical preliminaries for'a blow at this region on the scale of that which has proved so disastrous ,'at Verdun. In the Balkans there are indications that something important is afoot.' There is no word at the time of writing from Egypt. ' The Prince of Wales, it is reported, has joined the Headquarters Staff in Egypt. The German outrages on Dutch shipping have produced an angry note in the Press of Holland.
