A .private cable message received in Wellington yesterday from Sydney announces the death of Master Edward ("Dick") Kirby, eldest "son of Mr. Fred Kirby, of the "Bulletin's" literary staff, formerly of Wellington.. The deceased, who was 10 years of age,' had been ill for some time.

' i . At yesterday's meeting, of the Wellington Central Chamber Of Commerce the resignation of Mr. H. G. Hill as a member was 'received with regret, Mr. Hill having changed his place of residence to Nelson, -where he is to manage the Nelson-Stoke Fruitgrowers, Ltd.
Mr. Ernest Whiteman has been appointed motor expert and inspector to tlifc City Council, vice Mr. L. S. Drake, who has gone into camp. Mr. Whiteman has been for over ajear connected with the department which he, now controls, and is a capital mechanic and all-round motor expert. He has been a resident of Wellington for'sixteen years. The offer of his services for. military purposes was declined, oil the ground that ne was a. native of the United States.
Miss Ethel Morrison (nee Miss Ettio Maginnity), who was here recently as the contralto lead with the GilbertSullivan Opera Company' arrived from Sydney by the Riverina yesterday. Miss Morrison has lately been appearing in the musical revel, "So Long, Letty," which has made such a hit in Sydney, but was unfortunate to 3ufferptoniaino poisoning (for the third, time) recently, and has come across to New Zealand to recoup her health. Miss Morrison is a sister of Miss Ida Maginnity and Mrs. Quirk, of this city, and formerly did good work ivith tlio_ old, Wellington Amateur Operatic Society. She will return to Melbourne at Easter to resume her part in "So Long, Letty."
The Rev. Dr. Batchelor is expected to arrive in the Dominion before the end ofthis month. Dr. Batchelor is a noted missionary on the staff of the Church Missionary Society in Japan. He has a fine record of service extending over thirty years. He was decorated by the late Mikado for, philanthropic _ work among the Ainu; tho decoration is that of the Fourth Order of the SaCrcd Trea6nr6. He also received the Lanihcth degree of D.D. conferred upon him by the' Archbishop of Canterbury. He is also Archdeacon of Hokkaido. Ho has thS reputation of being an interesting speaker. Dr. Batchelor will visit the various centres in the Dominion, accompanied by the Rev. 0. J. luroberley, secretary of the New Zealand Ghurch . Missionary Society. ....
