MASTERTON NOTES

A team from the Feilding Bowling Olub came to Masterton on Saturday to play a match for the coveted Dixon Cup, which has been held by the local club for some time. The' green _ had been saturated on the previous night, and was scarcely fit to play upon. Still, it was decided that the visitors should not go back disappointed, and the match was played. Feilding had all the better of it, and won by 22 points to 16. The teams were as follow:— Feilding—Barrett, Mason, Sayirell, Fruish (s.); Masterton —Wilkes, W. Perry, C. Perry, Staples (s.). The whole of the rivers in the Masterton district were swollen on Sunday. Over an inch of rain fell between Friday night and Sunday morning. A large, quantity of small seeds has been grown in the neighbourhood of Masterton this season, and some of. the yields have been particularly heavy.. From four acres of red clover, Mr.. Fred. Evans,. of Upper Plain, took thirteen bags,, of an average weight of 2251b. per hag; Captain Donald Simson gave en illustrated lecture; in Masterton on Saturday night in aid of the North Wairarapa candidate in the Queen of the Carnival Competition. A Sale of pictures, etc., was also held. A picture of "Anzac," presented by Captain Simson, realised £138 3s. A farm on the Taratahi Plain, near Masterton, which -ps purchased a few years ago at £8 per acre, recently changed hands at £17 per acre. ' At the annual meeting of tho Masterton Chess Club, the following officers were elected Patron; Mr. F. W. H. Itummer; president, Mr. F. P. Welch: vice-presidents, Messrs. J. A. Connell and D. Guild; hon. secretary and treasurer,- Mr. W. Hope - general committee, Messrs. Jones, Dagg, Gibson, W. K. Welch, and G. H. Gupwell. It was decided that club members meet for practice on Thursday evenings. The golf season will open in Masterton in the course of a few weeks.

Mr. F. Brooks has disposed of his farm on the Tarntalii to Mr. T. O'Connor, of Tenui. Business premises to the value of about £20,000 are to be, erected in Masterton during the next few months. A shock of earthquake was experienced in Masterton at 12.25 o'clock on Monday afternoon.
