FIREMEN & FERRY STEAMER
MAORI MAY GET AWAY TO-NIGHT. No change has taken place with regard to the trouble on the ferry steamer Maori. It was.thought possible'that the vessel might get away on Saturday in order to bring passengers up from the south on Saturday night. This was found to be impossible, however, and the vessel still remains at her berth at tho Queen's Wharf. Tho southern mail, but no passengers, came by ;the Union Company's cargo vessel Kahika, which' arrived in port at 9.45 o'clock last night.
It is expected that the requisite number of firemen will- be forthcoming today, and it is hoped that the Maori will leave for Lyttelton as usual tonight. '
WHY THEY LEFT THEIR POSTS,
By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, March 18,
A number of the steamer Maori's firemen arrived at Lyttolton this afternoon, having travelled by the Wostralia as passengers. The men disagreed with tho reason given for their leaving the boat at Wellington, and stated that the true reason was because of tales carried to one of the engineers from the stokehold by one of tho firemen. No passenger boat is leaving Lyttelton tonight. Mails were brought by the Kahika, a cargo boat. Several southern members of the Reinforcements return-
ing from leave are stranded in Christchurch. Arrangements are being made by the military authorities to put them up at the King Edward Barracks.
