SHARP FIGHT WITH THE TURKS NEAR ADEN
On tlie Verdun front the failure of German attacks on the French positions west of the Meuse has been followed by a similar failure east of the river. -Five assaults, made in great strength on the village and fort of Yaux were broken by the -French artillery and machinegun fire, and repulsed with slaughter. The sinking pf the Dutch liner Tubantia. now definitely stated to have been'torpedoed, has aroused keen resentment in Holland. Another Dutch ship, the - Palembang, lias been torpedoed. The Dual Monarchy is said to have mobilised reserves which bring its total strength of men in the field and in training up to four millions. A Socialist deputy has mooted a proposal in the Italian Chamber for the creation of a National Government. It is said'that the proposal was favourably, received. The "Riissky Invalid" predicts a general advance of the Russian armies in the near future. They are not lacking, it declares, in material for a complete and crushing victory. A speech by Dr. Liebnecht precipitated an angry and disorderly scene in the Prussian Diet. The "Cologne Gazette," a German semi-official organ, makes anxious and somewhat unconvincing efforts to explain the incident away, incidentally denouncing Dr. Liebnecht as of our enemies."
