LEARNING TO MILK
SUCCESS OF AN ENGLISH SCHEME, Milking classes, which have been in progress for a couple of months in various parts of Essex, have proved extraordinarily successful, states the "Daily Mail." The object is to' help'to mako good the shortage of skilled milkers caused by the enlistment of so many men, and also to provide young people .\yith the means of earning a .livelihood as trained workers. J.n every case farmers have provided the cows required for the purposes of instruction, and liavo also given, the use of their premises ; while Lady Pcfcre has engaged the instructress, Miss Tregea, a wellknown Cornish expert. Already a number of past pupils have secured situations .as milkers at good wages. The classes have been conducted in such a way that the ordinary school work of rhe children has not been interrupted, and Education Committees from all parts are already asking for information as to the scheme. It may fie mentioned as a singular fact that, in the Eastern Counties of England, especially, women cannot be iuduce'd to take up milking, though they are willtog to perform many jobs on a farm at seed time and harvest.
