THE CITY'S MILK

TIME FOR ACTION

MUNICIPAL: MEASURES TO BE TAKEN

T» J ™speakahle 1" said Councillor w ul <?, odbel y chairman of the Public .Health Committee of the City Council. referring to the milk question of Wellington. "We have had evidence of the most flagrant adulteration which has been going on in Wellington, and that evidence has been forivardedi to the Health Department. They were very glad to get it,. and are making full investigations." But they have always had full powto deal, with the matter? ( ''That is so," said Councillor Godber, 'but it is one of those things-that calls for continual activity, and drastic punishment where the guilt is sheeted home. Look here, we (the Health Committee) have heen struggling for years now with this matter, and the sympathy we have received was not worth. a snap of the fingers?"'

The position now is that the City Corporation is now going to take over the work of directly supervising the City's milk and the intention is that there will. te no laxity in inspection for the future. Under the sanction of the Minister' for Public I Health (Hon. J. A. Hanan), powers are being vested in the City authorities to make regulations which will give them ample powers to deal very effectively, with the milk vendor who deLparts from the narrow stony way to make money out of the produce of the Wainui resorvoir, disguised as the emanation from the homely cow.

These regulations, which have been 'drawn up by tlie City solicitor, are to be considered at a sp<,oial meeting of the Public Health Committee to Tjo held on Monday evening. Thereafter they will have to be placed before the City Council and Minister, whose approval will set the ball rolling. The regulations provido for the appointment "of one or more inspectors, who will "bo given wide powers to enable him to do his work thoroughly, and any sample of milk ho may take will be analysed by the Government _ Analyst, who has promised the council all assistance. x >
