ST. PATRICK'S DAY

CITY CELEBRATION

SPORTS-AT NEWTOWN PARK

r St. Patrick's Day was celebrated * throughout New Zealand yesterday. In ■ (Wellington the celebrations were on an extensive scale—more extensive, in fact, than has been the case , in the :past. The. day of Ireland's patron saint was favoured with good weather. Bain threatened all day, but nothing worse' > than the threat occurred -until evening. For an outdoor gathering file weather ..was ideal. It was perfectly fine, fairly : cool, and there was an absence of the sun-glare wliich; has visited the city , of lute. From early morning , "tho wearing :of -the green" was much in evidence, and tho Irish.flag -wis.flown from' many a flagpole. The prospect of a procession drew a big crowd, whioh patiently - Jined thorouto for long before the apJiointed time. ... . ' . ■ , - The.celebrations commenced at ,9 a.m. ■ • pith-Mass at'.St., Mary , of'the Ansel's ; Clraroh, Boulcott Street. -There, was; '.a . )arge coDgreg'ation, and the Kei'. Father D.'Connell officiated. ' Special 'music was provided by the Marist Bros.!. boys! ihoir, under- the Rev.. Brother Emilian. Hibomians, in" full regalia, were present in strong force. Outside the church • a'considerable crowd- awaited cession. The. r St. Patrick's College Cadets paraded m Boulcott Street, and made r a good showing, and the Waterside -Workers!. Band helped with fitting ' the time;; The jpro- ;' cession;set off 'from Boulcott; Street : for Newtown; Park at about 10 o'clock.' Tho - Waterside Band led- the way, fol- ;■ lowed: by - the St. "Patrick's I '"College Cadets, St. Anne's Convent School tableau, St.' Anne's ' Convent '' schoolchildren', Thorndon, Marist Bros, schoolchildren, Kilbirnie Catholic schoolchildren, Newtowxl Marist School ■ .tableau, Sacred Heart school-children, Saored Heart tableau, Hiberr.ian Society, and motor-cars con- ; , yeying the clergy. Tho, excellent marching of the Cadets was a fine feature of the' procession. One of the vehicles used was decorated with an announce- - inent that "480,000' of Erin's sons are figliting with the Allies." This'placard, of course, raised no little'enthusiasm, which was again aroused by the claim fiat twenty-five Irishmen have won ictoria Crofeses! A. war-time tableau was .provided by the Newtown Marist Bros. School.,' Erin (Miss Florence Whittaker) was shown surrounded by the various Allied nations, who 'wore represented by little, boys bearing the flags -of the .countries, concerned. Another tableau' showed Erin (Hiss Mar.v Gavin) associated with such famous Irishmen ■as Emmett, O'Connell, Parnell, and ■ Redmond.'. Among the clergy, who joined in the procession, was His. Grace Archbishop, Redwood;; and. among the Hibernians who attended the gathering at the' park were Messrs. M. . Bohan, ' tha''founden.'.of,.:.the Wellington.,'.branch ; of the society in' 187-1, T. P. Redmond, and E.Corrigan, who joined the branch in 1875.

Throughout, the day green ribbons bearing the stamp of the St. Patrick's Day Committee were sold at sixpence eaoh, to assist in the relief of distress in Poland. . .The ribbon.' was donated by the Warehousemen's' Association, and ■ tho; .printing. was done, without charge' •> by tne daily-newspapers.; J ' Sports at the Park; ' j'AI _crowd; of -some thousands gathered ' ut. tlie rark,. where sports and ..games were indulged in all day.
