THE ARABIC'S CAPTAIN REWARDED. Licut.-Corainaiider W. Pinch, late captain of the ill-fated White Star liner Arabic, WHICH was torpedoed by a Gorman sub. marine on August 19 last, was recently tile recipient of ;i very handsome piece of plate awarded by the British Government ill recognition of his exemplary conduct ou thai ocuasiou. Tho Lord Mayor of Lon* don, in making the presentation, said that Oapt-nn Finch had played hie part with an extraordinary cooln«s and dexterity, and with a hmgnificcnt result. Torpedoed without warning, -the-Arabic sank in about ten minutes. Of tho 42,9 persons on board, passengers, officers, and crew, 390 were saved and 39 lost; anions tho total were Js Americans, of whom two perished. It was -a splendid tribute to the skill end capacity of Captain f'iuch, the oiiicors, and crew, and a striking testimony to the absence ol panic, that there was eo little loss of liic. Captain Pinch -was on the bridge at the time, but ho saw no eub. marine, lho pirni of plate presented to Captain Finch \iears tho inscription "Pre« seated by the British Government to Lieut.. Conimauder \\ in. Finch, R.N.R., master oi the steamship Arabic, of Liverpool, in re« ] cognition of his exemplary conduct when i his vessel was 1 torpedoed on the 19th i August, 1915."
Jicws has Jieeu received in Lyttelton, states the "Press," o£ a new steamer for' the New Zealand coastal trade. The vessel. which has been purchased in Sydney Dy Mr. D. Reese, of Reese Bros., Christchurch, 13 slightly smaller than the Opouri, which is owned by the same firm. S?I. Ef' o3 f tonnage is tons, and she is ltoft. m length, 26ft. in depth, and has a beam of 12ft. otn. She differs from the Opcairi also in that her hatches are situated fore and aft of the engine-room, instead of being forward. Formerly Known as the 'i'ay 1., she has been rechristened Orepuki, and was built at Home m 1908 by Messrs. Uoole Bros. She is reported as being a small consumer of coal and capable of steaming at 10 knots. It is understood that she was purchased at a reasonable figure, the buyers being lucky in securing such a vessel in view of tho present cost and scarcity of tonnage. She will .be used, in the timber trade between Aydia Bay and Lyttelton, and is due at this port for the first time about the end of the present month. En route she wiU call at Hobart.
It is expected that the Sum will arrive from Napier on Monday next to load pro* visions, etc., for East Coast sheep stations.
As the Mararoa is to dock at Lyttelton next Monday no cargo will be received by the vessel at Wellington on Saturday. After being: cleaned and painted the Mararoa will leave the southern port on Mouday as usual for Wellington.
As a token of the esteem in which he is held by his friends on the waterfront at Wellington, a very handsome solid silver cigarette case has been forwarded to- Mr. Alex. Hall, late engineer of- the Union Company's tug Ngatone, and who is now occupying a similar position on the wellknown auxiliary schooner Houto. Mr. Hall is especially well known to residents of Eastbourne, owing to his connection with the ferry steamer Duchess, on which vessel ho was engineer for some considerable time.
Lighthouse changes are announced by the Marine Department as under:—Mr. Pearce, late assistant lightkeeper at Cajje Brett, has-been promoted to Puysegur Point light* house as principal keeper. Mr. Willers, assistant keeper ait Cape Saunders, trans* fers to Puysegur Point in a similar capacity. Principal keeper Marlow, -with his wife and family, will be transferred to the Nuggets' as principal keeper, in place of Mr. P. J. Henaghan, who is retiring on eii'peraniiuation after 38 years' service,
The Storm is expected from Wanganui on Thursday next, and will load wool for the south.
The Ivauri, which lately arrived from 'Frisco, went into dock for cleaning at liyttelton yesterday afternoon. She is expected to leave that port about 1 o'clock to-day, and is duo here on Friday. She has 1500 tons of 'Frisco and Dunedin cargo to land here.
The Moeraki, which has been up for overhaul at Port Chalmers, is taking up Hie Manuka's time-table, and is expected from Lyttelton this morning. She is to leave for Sydney direct at 5 o'clock this evening.
It is understood that, Captain F. Naylor, at present harbour master at Hokitika, is to take command of the steamer Petone, which was recently acquired by a Christchurch syndicate. from the Canterbury Shipping Company. It is stated that she will make her initial trip for her new owners to-morrow, when she leaves Lyttelton for Greymouth to. load timber for Noumea.
From San Francisco and Vancouver, via Suva, the Wairuna is expected in Wei lington to-day. She has 2160 tons to dis* charge here, including a Quantity of caseoil.
Tho Manuka, from. Sydney direct, arrived shortly after 7 o'clock last evening, and berthed at Queen's Wharf No. 1 south. Particularly calm weather was experienced throughout the trip. Some fog was encountered at Wellington Heads, but not siuricien! to d-'lay the vessel.' She will commence discharge of her cargo this morning, and will leave for the south this evening.
The Tarawera, owing to a delay at Lyttelton, did not leave that port last evening as was expected, and will not now arrive here until Friday morning. . She will leave for northern ports at 5 p.m. tho same day. Cargo will be received up till 2 p.m.
A special meeting of tho Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers will be held in their rooms, Aitlten Street, at 7.30 o'clock oil Friday evening.
