STATEMENT BY COLONEL KHODES,

Reports of all deaths of men killed in action, of deaths in hospital, also reports of wounded and missing aro cabled from Alexandria Record Office, which is_ most efficiently managed by Major Fitzherbert, states Colonel R. H, Rhodes, in-a dispatch to the Government from' ' Egypt. Names of sick and wounded: admitted to hospitals are cabled from hospital as sanctioned bv you. The chief medical officer exercises discretion whether to cable minor ailments. The Rod Cross representatives meet hospital ships and sometimes cable friends immediately. Men also do this occasionally, consequently New Zealand relatives sometimes obtain information before it is supplied l(i them officially. When possible particulars of death and burial-place are sent. Metal crosses are now being erected on the graves of those buried In Egypt, - and I hope soon to send a photograph of eacli grave to next-of-kin.

Recoveries can be made on Commandant, N.Z. Base, Cairo, receipt and credited to deceased soldiers' account. Demand is made at once wliere it is known that a bank account exists, and arrangements are made for cheque cer« tificato of death with ledgers in leading Cairo and Alexandria banks. Wherever relatives have reason to think there is money to the credit of deceased 'jrildiers, they should let Headquarters, New Zealand Expeditionary Forco, Cairo, know by letter or cable to Zealandia, Cairo.| Money coming to the Record Office in the ofrects of deceased is handed over by the office to the Army Pay Department. Kits arc now always returned promptly.
