ENEMY FORCED TO RETREAT
London, March 13, 11.20 p.m. Tlie High Commissioner reports:— "In East Africa General Smutd states that an action was commenced, on Saturday against the German position in the Kitivo Hills, west of Taveta, where an obstinate struggle was continued until midnight with wavering fortunes. The hills are densely wooded and steep, and were hold by the enemy in strong force. A portion of the positions were taken land retakon several times. Wo made a final attack with the bayonet, and two" parlies securing a hold, maintained it until reinforced in the morning, when the German native troops wcro streaming towards Ease in a south-westerly direction.
"During the engagement the Kitovo Mounted Brigade was engaged in clear* ing the foot-hills north-cast of Kiliman. jaro, if the enemy's force, which was cut off from the main body by tho rapid British advance. The movements in progress bar the retreat of theso isolated forces westward.
"A strong column from the direction of Longsdo appeared on the Arusbamoshi Road in the rear of the main German concentration. The enemy, in consequence, are retreating southwards towards Usambara railway. The pursuit is continuing."
