A D.C.M. HERO

The following, from the "Alloa Journal" (Scotland), refers to a nephew of Mr. W. .D. B. Murray, Palmerston North, and Mr. H. H. Murray, of the Government Insurance Department, Wellington:—"His many old friends in Alloa will be pleased to learn that Mr. James H. Murray, sou of the late Mr. Hundly Gorcton Murray, National Bank, Alloa, has been awarded the coveted D.C.M.

"It was 011 June 4 that the gallant j soldier-.won such signal honours and a testimonial from General Paris, complimenting him '011 his behaviour when 'in action and for conducting himself insuch a gallant and courageous manlier.' " Mr. Murray comes of an old j fighting family. His grandfather wns the late Major John llnrray, 91st Argyllshire Highlanders, and was a near 1 relative of tho late Lieut.-General Sir Gordon Cuniming Skene, of Pitlurg and I Dice, Aberdeenshire, and Major-General j Forlong, Indian Army. When war j broke out he at onco offered his scrviccs and joined the Royal Naval Divi-; sion, and was attached to the Signal Company, Section 1, of the Royal Naval Division Engineers. In_the Peninsula he was employed! as a signalman, as a sapper, and as n dispatch rider between headquarters and the firing line. 011 the"day he won his modal, June A, lie was wounded, and sent to Malta Naval Hospital, where he remained for six weeks, returning' to Gallipoli 011 August 25, where 110 is again 011 active service. Whilst in training at Deal ho was offered a' commission, but preferred to remain in the ranks, as he understood that in that capacity it would be easier for him to arrange after the war for a speedy return to his position in Canada, which is being held open for him.
