SUBURBAN BOROUGH COUNCILS
LOWER HUTT. At last evening's meeting of tho Hutt llorough Council thero wero present: The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) and Councillors Hodgins, Meldrum, Carver, Brassei, Clendon, M'Dougall, Heron, Ball, and Hobbs. \
Prior to tho ordinary, a special meeting was held, at which the balancesheet for tho year 1915 was adopted and signed. The Mayor stated that it yroke well for tho council's officials tbat the document contained no tags.
Mr. AV. Box complained of tho frequent _ absence of newspapers ' from che public reading-room. A discussion ensued, in which Councillor Hodgins fixpressed the opinion that the matter was trifling, but Councillor Ball moved tliat tho matter should be referred to tho Library Committee to investigate, contending that if papers wore removed from the public reading-room by any person,. then the room ceased to fulfil the purpose for which it was intended. It was decided to write, asking the Hallway Department if it would be posfible to restrict the hours for. discharging stable refuse at the Hutt Station, tmd also to extend the concrete upon which the carts stand when loading. The engineer's report stated that the tarring of footpaths had been completed iti tire - following streets:—Te Momi Road, 14 ohains, area 812 square yards, cost £33 19s. 9d., or IO.OSOd. per square yard; Waterloo Road, 53 chains, area 12332 square yards, total cost £37 6s. !M., or "l!.838d. per square yard. At Tlarraud Street and Laing's Road the work had £5 17s. Id., or 6.11 d, per square yarfi. PETONE, A meeting of tho Petone Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: 'l'fie Mayor- (Mr. J. \V. M'liwari) and Councillors List, Cox, rorsyth, Jones, Anderwm, Brocklcfoank, M'Kenzie, and TrueraTOti The Health Inspector notified that there were three cases of infectious diseases in the borough, namely:—Hydatids, cerobro-spiiial meningitis, ' and puerperal fever. The tfe'retaunga Boating Club complained that cralt were interfered with whilst mooiod in tho ,boat-shelter. It Was resolved to erect a notice warning persons against the offence.
Messrs. AV. Barber and Co, submit, ted conditions in connection with a proposed right-of-way, and after considera. tion the council decided that the offer should be "turned down."
A petition from employees of the council asking that Friday, be reverted to as pay day was agreed to. Another petition from live sewerage men for an increase of wages was agreed to, and a further one from the gas stokers was referred to the Gas Committee. ) The engineer's report stated that building permits had been received for the month ns follows Three miscellaneous, of & total value of £40, the amount in fees being 15s. Tho total value of buildings crected for the year was '£26,154, and the total amount in fees £71 15s. The Mayor stated, in respect to. a statement having been made to the o_f-> feet that theno was a probability of a shortage of water in the borough, that having gone carefully intovthe_ matter, he had no 'hesitation, in saying that such was not the case.
