THE POPE AND THE WAR
SUICIDE. OP EUROPE Br Telegraph—Press Association—Codytl git .London, March 11. The Pope, in writing to Cardinal Basil Pompili, 6ays: "Throwing ourselves among the. belligerents as a father between sons at strife we' entreated them in the name of God, Who is love infinite, fo renounce the purpose of mutual destruction. Our paternal, counsels have hitherto been unheeded, but we must raise our voice against the war, which seems to be the suicide of civilised Europe. We trust Catholic families will join in fervent prayer and Christian mortification, and we especially appeal to the mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters of the combatants to 'lay at the Heavenly -Throne those offerings of voluntary sacrifices which may turn aside the most just anger of God.".
