The Kauri, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Thursday last from San Francisco cleared the American port on February 7, anU ran into a dense fog lasting three itlyl. Fine weather then favoured her, and the equator was crossed on the thirteenth day out. "Variable to strong easterIS winds with line weather were encountered until March 1, when strong northerly winds, with heavy rain ana thick fog, set in, and thi6 continued until her arrival off Taiaroa Heads at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Kauri. left Napier on December 28 for San Francisco, Fiji, and Pago Pago, with'a full cargo of wool and general merchandise. At Pago Pago were <ying the Gorman steamers Elsyess (10,000 tons), which escaped 'from Sydney when war' was declared, also the Gorman Samoan inter-island steamer, both of which have been in Pago Pago for 19 months. OPAWA FROM LIVERPOOL. ■ Advice has been received by the local office of the F. and S. Line to tho effect that the chartered steamer Opawa, en route from Liverpool, left Sydney on Thursday morning for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is duo hero about March 20. ' MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. 0. Petersen, second officer of the Oalm, having come ashore, Mr. J. Brodie, late of the Storm, has taken his place. Mr. T. Atkins is now. chief officer of the Moeraki, vice Mr. Spain, who has transferred to tho Loongana, in a similar capacity. In consequence of a special trip which she is making between Lyttelton and Kaikoura, tho Wakatu will not arrive here now until next Wednesday. She returns south the following day. With a full load of coal from Newcastle {ho Kaiapoi arrived in port shortly after noon on Saturday. After discharge the Kaiapoi will leave for Greymouth to load for "Melbourne. Laden with produce, the Wootton was expected in port last night from Lyttelton. She is scheduled to sail again to-day. The Putiki, with rtcep from P'Urville Island, is expected in port on Wednesday, She will leavo the sanio day for Westport. Tho Mapourika arrived from the coast on Saturday afternoon. She will leave on Tuesday on her next trip. The Tarawera, which was considerably delayed by engine trouble on her run £swri uje coast from Auckland, arrived in port_carly on Saturday morning. She left shortly after 5 o'clock the same evening tor Dunedin direct. Lyttelton is being omitted on the run down in order. that nlie may pick up her usual running time. The Union Company's Kamo, which arrived here from Greymoutli yesterday, returns to tho West Coast port about Wednesday. The following officers are associated with Captain H. L.
