SLOT MACHINES IN SCHOOLS
Tho Now South Wales Minister for Education stated recently that arrangements had been mado for installing ponny-in-the-slot machines on various school grounds to supply chocolat-es and other sweets to the scholars. "Ono firm made application to us for tlie .right to instal slot machines at tho public schools for tho sale of chocolates," Mr. Griffith said. "The firm undertook to provido machines lin which t.lis goodc would l be supplied at wholesale priccs,' allowing tho children to have tho whole of tho profits for their various school funds. I then gave instructions that a number of other firms should be written to asking them to make various kinds of offers. The offers of two firms havo been accepted, each for a certain number of schools, Ono condition of tho arrangement is that the goods supplied must bo of the best quality, and of Australian manufacture." Mr, Griflith added that he felt a cortain reluctance in ono respect. It was possible tho machines might injuro tlio business of small shopkeepers in tho vicinity of schools, but it seemed l right that the children should havo tho profit of tho material they consumed, and at the same time got a guarantee of its absoluto wholesomenoss.
