The situation at Verdun lias altered comparatively little since it was last .reported upon, but desperate .fighting continues west 'of the Meuse. In this area some of tho ground lately captured by the enemy has been recovered in French counter-attacks, but on the other side of the river the Germans have stormed and hold the Haudmonfc redoubt. In an interesting rejoinder to Major Oluirdiill's alarmist speech, Mr. Balfour defends the work and administration of the Admiralty, and declares that the construction of now ships compares most favourably with what has been done in any other country. The Russians continue to drive the Turks before thorn along the Black Sea coast of Armenia, and are also extending their foothold in Western Persia. s{r. Donohoe and others forward interesting reports concerning the peace movement in Turkey and an alleged withdrawal of German troops from tho Balkans.
