NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBr 'JLE.N'coi.I Nominations for the Pahiatua meeting close on Friday evening, ™^, n ,'" e3 f° r 'he Canterbury Jockey Clubs great Easter and Autumn Handicaps close on Friday. Acceptances for the Masterton meeting we due ou Friday. i?i meeting will be continued at i'lemington to-day. The principal events are the weight-for-age races, C. M. Lloyd Stakes, one mile, and Loch Plate, two miles. HoJmnuia, who credited Mr. H. Whitney with the Nelson Cup yesterday, had Jm'". i lrevioi,s| y won JL race this season, ilus is the second time tho Whitney colours have been successful in the same race, Ceylon winning two years ago. J. li. 1 rosser has now owned the runner-up two years in succession. Last year I'mincr beat Gold Soult, and Stepnev ran 6econd to Koumania yesterday. •' bamiscn, who won the five-furlong hack race at Nelson yesterday, is a stable companion of Speeialform, and carries the colours of Mr. A. W. Kntherford, jun. bamiscn hafi not previously won a raco this reason. l.rainer H. Cutis is still confined to his room at "ftangamii, as a result of the accident he mei with last month, when lus foot was J)adly cut. Mr. D. G. Greenwood has presented his thrne-jvm.oUl Xanthos. by or ) to be rallied on
half of the Waipara Queen in the coming Queen Carnival. The February meeting of tho Woodnllo District Jockey Club will result in a profit of over JMOD. Ponding tho permanent appointment of a succcssor to the late Mr. E. J. Gothard, Messrs. Goldfinch and Kenney will act as joint secr/iiries. liorke's Drift is to be nominated for tho Great Autumn Handicap at Riccartun. His trainer, P. T. Hogan, will liavo such' a big string engaged at Rivorlon at Easter time that it has been decided to solid the Duucdiu Cup winner to W. M'Donald's stable to receive his. preparation for the big mile and a half event at liiccarton. Marsinah and Napoleon have lel't J. Jamieson's stables, and are now trained by H. A. T'olford at Trenthnin. Tho last-named is a trifle lame, but Marsinah looks very well. Red Light, winner of the Maiden Race at Nelson, is a four-year-old horse, t>y Gay Spark from Portland Lass. He was in F. Higgott's stables as a two-year-old, but was a big over-grown youngster, and no success attended his efforts on tho tracks. His owner turned him out for twelve months, and lately ho has been in P. Reardon's stables at Blenheim. Ho is a very lazy worker on tho tracks, but a different liorso in a race. J. H. Prosser, dissatisfied with the weights allotted his horses at -Masterton, has scratched his whole team for both, days' engagements. If tho cabled time for tho Australian Cup, viz., 3min. 55sec., is correct, it is a record for the race. Tho previous best being held by Wallalo, who took a second longer to encompass the two miles and a quarter. When the last mail left Melbourne Cherubim was quoted at an outside price for the Australian Cup, and his victory would probably be a turn up for tho ring. An outsider has not often been' successful in this race in the past, and the two preceding events were won by pronounced favourites. The Nelson meeting will bo brought to a conclusion to-day. The autumn meeting of the Napier Park Racing. Club .will be held on tho Greeumeadows Course to-morrow and Saturday. The Marco-Oriole filly, recently imported from England by Jfr. W. G. Stead, is entered for tho Trial Hack Stakes at Napier to-morrow. • A very weak class of hurdle horses are at present doing duty in tho Dominion. At Wanganui last month two veterans in Black Northern and Flingot made the opposition look very cheap, and in the south Bore has won five races in a very short, space of time. At Napier tomorrow the same thing has to be reported, and of the seven acceptors in the Hack Hurdles only two—Scorch and Wirokino—have won over fences. Tho firstnamed has been operated on for wind troubles, and Wirokino lias so far not done anything to suggest that ho is much good. A promising recruit, is Kooya, who is making her first appearance in a jumping event. Judging by events in tho City yesterday Eligible and Jlyginas arc likely to start favourites in the Clip and Flying Handicap at Napier to-morrow. Some surprise was expressed yesterday at the defection of Multiplication, Bst. 91b., from tho 'Jfiying Handicap at Napier. It is probable that the Multifid gelding, who has been giving his trainer trouble lately, has had to bo stopped in his work on account of soreness. Majcstikoff, tho winner of tha Maiden Plate, at tho Akaroa County Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, was purchased by Mr. I J .' Delorgcy for 40 guineas at the sale'of Mr. Harvey Patterson's thoroughbreds in November last. This was uor first raoe, so that she has soon mado a return of her purchase money. Dan Cameron, who won a double at faie Akaroa County meeting on Saturday, is a woll-bred gelding by Martian—-Lady Jehu, by Benzoin—Kitty, by Phaeton— Catherine Wheel, by lliixim—Miss Kate. Ho has not dono a great deal of raoing but'figured as «. hunter at one stage of his career. On moro than one occasion he has shown pace in his races, but he does not stay well, and his performances on Saturday were the best ho has been responsible for 60 far. Bui's added to his record as a hurdler on Saturday, when jio defeated two opponents at the Akaroa County meeting. He has started, in eight jumping. events sinco Boxing Day, and has beou successful five times. Tha Auckland horseman, P. Brady, bus definitely doeided to settlo at Marton, and he removed tbore early this wenk. Owing to illness in J. Buchanan's family Brady will do the riding of the Karamu team at Napier this week, t
