WELLINGTON SOUTH
PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY MEETS.
A meeting of the Wellington South Progressive Society was held at Newtown last evening, Mr. Basil Coopet presiding. The following resolutions Vfere carried : —(1) That an expression of sympathy with the society's solicitor (Mr. B. J. Fitzgibbon) in his severe illness bo sent to him. (2) That the Postmaster-General ]>e asked why the use of the slot telephone at Newtown is twopence when the charge for machines in other places is a penny. It was decided to ask the Government to reduce the charge to one penny. (3) That the City Council be asked to notify the society of the proposed' date of the opening of the Constable Street and Maranui tramway connections, and that a committee of business members of the society consider tha question of an opening ceremony. (4) That a letter bo sent to the City Oounoil protesting against tho con« tinued mismanagement of the Newtown Museum and Hall, and that a committee, consisting of Messrs. George, Cooper, Caterer, Campbell, Ludwig, Crowes, Matthews, and the secretary ; (Mr. J. Castle), meet next Monday to ' formulate proposals. for improvements. (5) That a letter be sent to the Government suggesting postponement of committal to any commercial policy or agreement with any society or body, until after the proclamation of national peace. (6) That the City Council be asked to fence in the section opposite the' lata Newtown Hotel, as the section as at present used is an unsightly dumping ground.
