CHAMPION OF CHAMPION RINKS. | FINAL BETWEEN NEWTOWN AND KETONE. Local bowlers were interested yesterday m the champion of champions rink tournament, played out by the best riuk of each eiry and suburban club in Wellington. There were sixteen clubs represented on the Wellington Club's green, when a start whs made. Owing to the recent rain and the moist atmosphere the green »'as fairly stiff in the morning, but worked a little easier as the day progressed. The surprise of the first round "'as the defeat ot the Wellington Club's crack rink (skipped by I'orteous) by Te Hiwi (with Shallcrass in command). Porteous was two up on the twentieth head, and lay four on the last, when the head was burnt by Warwick. Te Hiwi lay two when the skips went up on the replayed head. Frost was unable to shift them with tiro drives. Porteous fell a yard short with liis first, and. Shallcrass v:as also shy. With, his last bowl Porteous drove, and went clear between the two shot bowls, through a passage with only a quarter of an inch to spare on each side. Shallcrass then bumped another of his bowls into the third shot, and. lay the game. The game between Karori and Kelburn was a capital one, with a close finish, but Johnsonville gave Lower Hntt a good trouncing. Seatoun played all over tipper Hutt, and Newtown won from Victoria with nothing to spare. 11ataitai did the same with Eastbourne, and Petone found no difficulty in disposing of Thorndon. . In the second round Petone headed Seatoun from the first end, '.vhc.n they notched a six, and were nnver t!ii»<ateucd with trouble right ■ through. Kelburn won easily from iolinsonvilic; Ntw'.awn won by a narrow margin from Tlataitaii and Te Hiwi won easily from Lyall Bay. Both games' in the third round were splendidly contested. On the twentieth head the score was 20—17 in favour of Kelburn. Wiggins drew a lovely shot, but Fowler drew a better, and then Coles raked out Wiggins's shot, and when the skips went down Petone was lying two. Shallcrass put up a good shot which just missed being a counter. Beynon drew another shot, and Shallcrass failed to get up to the jack; Be'ynon, with deadly certainty, played another splendid shot, and lay the game. In the Newtown-Kel-burn game Ivelburn was one up on the eighteenth head, after a neck-and-neck struggle. On the next head, played in the dark, Newtown was able to count six shots, making the score 24—1!t in Newtown's favour. The final between the Petone and New. town Clubs will be nlayed on the Wellington Club's green at 3.30 p.m. to-day. WELLINGTON CENTRE MEETS. Tho executive of the Wellington Bowling Centre met last evening. Mr. P. Moadowcroft presided. The meeting approved the action of its chief officers in having tho singles played on the Victoria green. It was decided to play the first Tound of the pennant ties on Saturday, March 18. Newtown will play Wellington (four teams at home and four away), and Victoria will play Petone (three teams at home and three away). The winners will play on the following Saturday. With a view to keeping up the standard of the bowling greens in Wellington and bringing them up to the highest te ei'co of excellence' attainable, Mr. E. J, Hill stated that he intended to recommend to the annual meeting of the Centre that a substantial bonus should be offered to the green-keeper who provides the best green for the association tournament of 1017. The idea was that a committee should judge the greens. A letter was received from the Mayor thanking tho Centre for a donation of £59 toward!) the Wounded Soldiers' Fuud. The secretary said that the whole of the receipts of the recent tournament were devoted to tho fund mentioned. Fifty-eight clubs entered at J6l, and Dr. Ross,' of Petone, though unable to send a team, forwarded on entrance fee, making the .£59. The expenses of running the tournament were 155., but this amount is to ,be P®id ou t of the Goneral Fund. The last Thursday in June was fixed on as the date of the annual meeting. Tho champion of champion pairs are to play on the Nowtown green on Wednesday,. March 15. SATURDAY TEAMS.
