BUTCHERS AWARD
AN INCREASE IN WAGES. The Wellington Operative Butchers' Union's dispute was lieard_ before. Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, yesterday. Mr. W. A. Grc-nfell appeared for tho employers. Messrs..- W. Wolland, E. Barber, and A. Cbeeseman were assessors for the employers, and Messrs. J. Nind, A. Needham, and A. Riach acted for the union. Tho claims of the union, compared with the present conditions and wages, were as follow Hours, 49 per week, to be worked between tho hours of 7 a.m. and o p.m. on five days of tho week, t a.m. and 12 noon on Saturdays (present award hours under, the Shops and Offices Act); slaughtermen, commence i a.m. ou Thursdays and l tSaturdays, 8 a.m. other days, except in case of holiday: work to coase not later than 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 12 noon on Saturdays, S p.m. on other days, cxcept on a day preceding a holiday : .men caiting from slaughterhouses, 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. ou three days. 6 a.m. to noon on the weekly half-holiday, and t a.m. lo 5 p.m. on other days. ( Wages: First shopman or small goods man, £3 15s. per week (£3 10s.): second, £3 ss. (£3); all others, £3 (£2 lis.): rider-out, twenty-one years or over,. £1 12s. 6d.,; slaughtermen £3 10s with overtime at the rate or timo and a half for all work m excess o forty-four hours per week; casual slaughtermen, £4 per week, los. per dav or 3s. por hour. Meat allowance is asked for as provided in the present award. Casual labour shall be paid the rate of Is. 6d an hour, with a minimum of eight hours (Is. 3d., i a minimum of six hours). The new demands ,provide for apprentices at the following rates: First year, l'S- 6d. poi week; second, £1; third, £1 55.; fourth. £110s.: fifth, £2. Iu the present award the provision is for boy labour as follows l-Under sixteen years of age,l s 6d.; under seventeen years, £1, uno<? eighteen voare, £1 Ss.; under twentyone £1 1(K The demands also make provision for holidays, under-rate workers. and preference. An agreement was come to on practically all points in dispute on lines laid down in the old agreement a8 _ regards wages. This mattei was set tied by the employers allowing men butchers an increase ali lound ™ 4s ner week. In the case of fust shopmen and small goods men, their wagM will bo increased from lus. 1 los. per week, all other journeymen £3 ner week (instead of Jis.i. , The agreement is to for three years from the date>of its gistration, which wil. be fixed by Arbitration Court.
