Suth-erland's-"Sandy The soldiere' candidate is at present eading in the Wairarapa Queen of the carnival Oompetition. The weather has been excessively hot luring the past week, and a shortage of vater is being experienced in many out-1 ying districts. The hot and dry weather has resultid in considerable grass fires at Matauwi, near Masterton, and large parlies have been at work fighting flames and endeavouring to . save the settlers' •lomes. A good deal of damage has already been done to fences and stock. A four-romed house in Masterton, nwned by Mrs. "William M'Laren, and pccupied by Mr. Duncan M'Laren, was lestroyed by fire on Monday afternoon. "Welcome rain fell in tbo district at an early hour on Tuesday morning, which had t~he effect of suppressing the grass fires.
