TJie Opaki Rifl© Chib held its usual (ompetition on the Fairview Range on Saturday. Mr. H. Donald was the top icorer, with the respectable score of 90 rom scratch. The Mnstert-on' Technical School reipened oil Monday with a satisfactory attendance of pupils. Tliere are at present thirty-six parents in the Masterton Hospital, in*-' iluding thirteen in the isolation ward. The Masterton Homing Club flew an ntervnl race from Wellington on Satirday, which was won by Mr. J. Suth-erland's-"Sandy The soldiere' candidate is at present eading in the Wairarapa Queen of the carnival Oompetition. The weather has been excessively hot luring the past week, and a shortage of vater is being experienced in many out-1 ying districts. The hot and dry weather has resultid in considerable grass fires at Matauwi, near Masterton, and large parlies have been at work fighting flames and endeavouring to . save the settlers' •lomes. A good deal of damage has already been done to fences and stock. A four-romed house in Masterton, nwned by Mrs. "William M'Laren, and pccupied by Mr. Duncan M'Laren, was lestroyed by fire on Monday afternoon. "Welcome rain fell in tbo district at an early hour on Tuesday morning, which had t~he effect of suppressing the grass fires.
