THIEVES ON THE PROWL
Light-fingered gentlemen aro busy in Mio environs of .Hopper and Wallace Street. A lady returned from Christchurch, last week, to find that her house had been broken into and several articles purloined, tho most valunblo of which was a gold chain. Tho thief or thieves detached tho chain from a gold watch, which was left behind. They apparently thought that the watch might bo traced—in event of its disposal—through its number. Another gentleman on Hopper Stroet had £10 taken from his house recently. The money was "house rent," which ho had that day collccted. Another theft, in Wallace Street, left distress in its trail. A man employed at the Government Printing Works brought home his month's wages, amounting to £15. His wifo placed tho money in a drawer in tho bedroom bureau, and on the following day, on her return after a brief absence, sho found that tho money had gone, aud sho is now faced with the problem of how to meet last month's bills.
